A closet isn’t just a storage space; it’s a sanctuary for your wardrobe and a reflection of your personal style. Every day, you open your closet and choose how you will look and feel that day.
My husband has been using the closet in our guest bedroom after we converted our primary closet into a mini nursery for my daughter. I got a dream IKEA PAX wardrobe, but his closet has been so basic. Let’s take a look at how you can create the closet makeover of your dreams!

How do I redo my closet on a budget?
Don’t worry, a closet makeover doesn’t have to break the bank; in fact, it can be an exciting and budget-friendly project. Whether your home has a small closet or a walk-in, there are many different ways to tackle closet makeovers.
Step 1: Measure and plan your closet
Before diving into purchasing any closet organization supplies, measure your closet space meticulously. Measure the height, width and depth of your closet, as well as any other considerations (ie door height).
Understanding the dimensions ensures that any storage solutions or additions fit seamlessly. Also, take note of any alcoves or nooks that could accommodate specific shelving or organizational units.
Step 2: Choose the right closet organization system
Selecting a suitable closet system is crucial. Opt for a system that aligns with your storage needs and complements the available space. Affordable modular systems or standalone units can efficiently organize your clothes, shoes, and accessories.
If you can, sketch out some ideas of how you want your closet makeover to look. Otherwise, browse online and take note of what you’d like in your new closet. Make a list of musts to suit your wardrobe.
But I don’t know what I need!
That’s ok! Start by asking yourself questions on how you want to use your closet. Do you need mostly rods for hanging or are your pieces more of the folding kind? What’s the percentage of each? Are you sharing the closet with another person? Talk about what everyone’s needs are.

Also consider what other storage space you have. Do you also use it to store linens or other articles that aren’t clothes? Maybe you need a space at the top for extras like this to be out of the way but still within reach when you need them.

When selecting a closet system, make sure it will fit in your space, as well as leave the desired amount of hanging space on the sides of the organizer.
I chose the ClosetMaid Suite Symphony. I like it because it can be customized and you can add on drawers and shelves.
Step 3: Clear the clutter
In order to begin your closet makeover journey, you must start by decluttering. Don’t skip this step! I know it can seem intimidating and discouraging at first, but trust me, you’ll be so happy you did it.

You’re going to have to remove things from the closet anyways, so you might as well see what’s in there. Do you have some things ended up in there but should be stored somewhere else? (Points to those who spotted the step ladder in Avais’ closet). Sort through your belongings, identifying items to donate, sell, or discard.
Step 4: Remove the old closet system
I always like to start with a blank slate, so let’s remove the old closet. If you have a wire system, you need to pop off the old brackets. I used a pry bar and hammer. You can wedge the pry bar under the brackets to remove them.
The anchors that were used left BIG holes behind sadly. So, I took the time to patch the walls and paint.
Deep clean the closet
When’s the last time you dusted in there? Take this opportunity to vaccuum any cobwebs, wash the floor, and wipe down the walls. Does it need a fresh coat of paint? These are all great ways to start fresh!

A clean and clutter-free space provides a fresh canvas for your closet makeover and allows you to assess the true space available.
Step 5: Build the DIY Closet Tower
You can save on installation costs by assembling and installing the closet system yourself. In fact, many modular systems come with user-friendly instructions and require basic tools, enabling you to create a tailored storage solution for your closet makeover without the need for professional assistance. You might remember how I used the IKEA PAX system in my bedroom to design a functional wardrobe for my clothes.
For this closet makeover, I used this. Here’s a few tips to build this system
- Follow the instructions. Lay down the pieces as the book shows, paying attention to the finished edges and holes
- Build the 2 centre units, then make sure the bottom one is level and plumb before mounting it the wall. If it’s not level and you add the second unit on top, it will not magically fix itself
- After mounting the first unit to the wall, get someone to help you place the second one on top. I should have asked for a helping hand

- When installing the rods, mark the brackets on the cabinet and the wall before drilling

- Make sure the rods are level by using a level!
- I wasn’t able to get my rod brackets into studs on the wall, but I used the anchors provided. The anchors have been strong

Step 6: Personalize the Closet with Drawers
My husband wanted to add drawers so he could store his socks, underwear and T-shirts. So I added 3 drawers. You can add a max of 4 drawers to this closet system.

I like how simple the drawers were to install. After I assembled them, I added the rails to the closet tower. The book even tells you which holes to insert the slides, so there is no guess work involved.

Step 5: Organize with purpose
As you begin to organize your belongings within the new system, consider functionality. Arrange your items based on frequency of use or category. Also, utilize bins, baskets, or dividers to keep smaller items tidy and accessible. A well-organized closet not only looks great but also streamlines your daily routine. Remember, you’re doing this closet makeover to meet your needs.

Step 6: Personalize your space
Whether your closet has its own room or is simply a small space with a door, consider using some little decorative details to make it more appealing. Add a touch of personality to your revamped closet that makes you smile when you open to it. You can incorporate personal touches such as decorative hooks, framed artwork, or stylish storage boxes. These accents can elevate the ambiance of the space without adding significant costs.
The Reveal: Embrace a transformed closet
Here is the final look! Doesn’t it look like a much bigger closet without all that clutter? I’m especially happy that you can actually see the nice clothes!

Doing a closet makeover on a budget is an invigorating experience that allows you to reimagine and optimize your storage space. By breaking down the steps and taking your time to be intentional with your choices, you can achieve a functional and aesthetically pleasing space without overspending.

Remember, the key to a successful closet makeover lies in thoughtful planning, resourcefulness, and a touch of creativity. With these budget-friendly tips, your closet can become not only an organized haven for your belongings but also a stylish reflection of your unique taste and lifestyle.
Why I like the ClosetMaid Suite Symphony Closet System
I really like the Closetmaid Suite Symphony System because:
- It was affordable. Unlike higher end closet, the centre frame with the rods costs under $200.
- It came with everything I needed, including screws and wall anchors too
- It was very simple to build and mount. It’s a project you can do by yourself. The instructions were clear. I had no issues building it.
- It’s easy to customize and add more elements. I chose to add drawers, but they also have shelves, shoe shelves and more that are compatible with the system. I would rather purchase ready made drawers then build my own!
- It looks great, and it’s sturdy! It’s great for a guest room. I can also see it really functional for a cost closet with space to store season items like coats, mittens, hats, etc. It would be great as a kids closet or nursery too
- This Closetmaid system comes in 2 different widths. I chose the narrower with because my husband wanted more hanging space. but if you need more drawer space, opt for the wider cabinet (which you can also customize with shelves and drawers).
- This closet also comes in white or dark brown with the matching drawers etc.
