If you have been here for a minute now, then you know I can’t resist a good thrift find or Facebook market place find. No matter the condition of the piece I can always see the potential beyond the scratches and the scuffs. Such was the case with this Marketplace night stand flip.

Hunting for the Perfect Piece
When hunting for furniture such as this nightstand, on facebook marketplace or in thrift stores, the key is to ensure the foundation of the piece is stable and strong. Scratches and scuffs are surface level problems that can be fixed easily for furniture flips. Anything deeper becomes a structural issue and affects the longevity of the furniture and your time spent repairing it may not be worthwhile.
Finding a $20 Gem
I am making over my daughter’s room. My goal is to furnish it with vintage inspired items. I happened upon this $20 Facebook Marketplace nightstand. It wasn’t perfect but the potential was definitely there. A beautiful wooden nightstand with a strong base.

My vision was to create my own version of the Anthropologie dresser. Something classic, charming and that would fit well with the vintage floral aesthetic of my daughter’s bedroom. Keep reading to see if the furniture makeover turned out similar to what I envisioned.
Sanding the Surface to Prepare for Paint
The process was fairly simple, but required patience and attention to detail. I started off by sanding the dresser down using a p80 grit sandpaper and my power sander.

Using a handheld sander for the edges and corners allowed me to have a smooth surface area to work with. The goal is to scruff up the surface, not to get it down to the MDF or wood.

Priming the nightstand
The next step was to prime the nightstand. I went with the BIN shellac primer. This particular primer provides a solid base for the paint to stick to and seals the surface well. I’ve used lots of primers. As long as they are high adhesion primers meant for cabinet or furniture paint, it will work!

Resin Flowers – For a Whimsical Touch
My favorite part of this entire process was creating these beautiful resin flowers. I have made them in the past before for my daughter’s cupboard in her nursery and they were absolutely darling.
The process itself is fairly easy. You start off by mixing the 2 parts of resin solution in a bowl and pour into the flower molds. Let the mold dry for 15-20 minutes. Once dry, the flowers pop right out. The end result is these lovely resin flowers that you can bend and shape to your contentment.

To attach the resin flowers to the nightstand, I used Gorilla Glue to ensure they wouldn’t budge. Then I just played around with them, moving them around to see which layout created the design that would fit well with the aesthetic of the room. These flowers added such an elegant touch to the whole nightstand.

Painting the Nightstand
The final step of this process was to paint the night stand. I painted it Colonial Blue by Benjamin Moore. It is this beautiful airy color that flows well with the pink paint and flowers I had throughout the room. I used the Benjamin Moore Advance paint in Pearl finish. And because I was painting furniture, I made sure to use cabinet paint, which holds up better for everyday use.
I used a paint brush over the edges and flowers. Then I used a foam roller on all the flat surfaces. I always paint 2 light coats of paint to get the best finish, so don’t glop it on!!

Reveal of this Darling Nightstand!
The end result was this stunning Nightstand. One glance at this and you would think it was straight from an Anthropologie showroom. And not a $20 Facebook marketplace find.

I hope to do more of these furniture flips and makeovers in the future. The character of an older piece of furniture is always unique. And such updates tend to be an affordable option than dropping a few $$ at a furniture showroom.
