I’m so excited to decorate for Christmas this year! I spent months making over my Mom’s Living Room this year. It used to be a drab boring room.

I transformed my mom’s living room by adding picture frame molding, I ripped out the old fireplace and built a modern fireplace with baseboard molding. To make the living room fireplace really pop, I upcycled an old coffee table I found on the curb and added penny tile.

This year, I opted to decorate my mom’s living room to celebrate all the hard work I put into it over the year! It’s also likely the last year we will celebrate Christmas here. My mom will likely will downsize, so I wanted to go all out to make it special for the holidays!
Picking Your Christmas Color Scheme
Before heading to the store, look at images of living room Christmas decor. Once you get to the store, everything looks so beautiful! It can be overwhelming to figure out what colors, and textures you want.
I have rounded up 23 beautiful Christmas ideas. What are you drawn to?

Here are a few common color combinations for Christmas living room decor in 2023:
- A neutral Christmas Palette: Black, Brown, White and Greens. You can make this pop with a few subtle gold accents. Textures include wood, velvet and woven
- Traditional Christmas Colors: Red, Green and White. This is Hallmark Christmas colors. Textures include shiny silver tinsel, and fur
- Pastel Christmas Decor: Baby blue, rose, rose gold, mint green. Typically accented with either silver and gold.
- Glamorous Holiday Vibes: Gold, sparkles, and silver
- Minimal Christmas: Wood ornaments and beads
I also look at which of these color schemes will work with my existing living room decor.
My Neutral Christmas Scheme
I have really been loving the neutral and minimal vibe of Studio McGee aesthetic over the past year. I looked at a lot of their inspiration to pick my decor. I chose silver, browns, white and gold for my neutral Christmas palette.
When I dumped out my ornaments, I had a lot of bright colors – purple, blue, green and red. I didn’t want to spend more money, so I bought a can of spray paint and sprayed them gold. It’s that EASY!
My Favorite New Ornaments: Using Ribbon Ornaments
I didn’t want to spend a lot on decor. I’ve collected quite a bit over the years! After spray painting the old ones, I updated my ornaments by buying 2 packs of velvet ribbon bows. Velvet has been trending this year
These velvet bow were only $7 a pack. I love the softness they add. When I brought them home, they were flattened by the packaging. To fluff them up, I used my steamer. This took the wrinkles out and brought them back to life!
Decorating My Christmas Tree

I prefer the look of an evergreen natural Christmas Tree because I like a more minimal look. A flocked Christmas tree is also a great option if you’d like to add a tree with a snowy look.
I picked a 7 foot tree. The height of a tree should fill up the height of a room. There are 9 foot ceilings in this living room.
I started by adding each color of ornament. I spread each color out out evenly. Then, I added the velvet bow ornaments to the tip of the branches.

I also had a pack of acorn Christmas ornaments that I used for whimsy on my tree. Paired with the bow ornaments, it make the tree unique and fun!
To keep with the bow theme of this year’s Christmas tree, I added an oversized gold bow to the top of the tree as a tree topper.

Layering the Fireplace Mantle with Christmas Decorations

I kept the Christmas mantle classic and clean. I layered a plain old evergreen garland, with a eucalyptus garland. Then I added a few gold glitter floral sprigs to make the fireplace pop!
I have been collecting vintage candlesticks for a few years! I placed black and gold candlesticks holders and candles to add height to the fireplace.

Faux Vintage Artwork on your TV

To make any TV look like a piece of artwork, I simply found a YouTube channel with vintage art. It even plays holiday music. You can turn this on during Christmas dinner or just keep it on in the background for a nice ambiance.
Creating a Christmas Village

To highlight this new penny tile table that I created, I wanted to add a Christmas Village scene. I layered bottlebrush trees in gold and green with a few wooden trees that I created from scrap wood. It’s such a whimsical touch to this living room.

Why I love decorating a Living Room for Christmas
After I finished decorating, I sat back and enjoyed the view. With the Christmas tree lights on, the room looked cozy and inviting.
I hope you enjoy a beautiful holiday season with your loved ones. No matter how you decorate, or how much you spend on your decor, remember that this season is about making your loved ones feel special and loved.
Enjoy making the memories. Xoxo, Hana
